Soham Common Land & Nature Conservancy
Since 1973, as Lord of the Manor, with as
much failure as success, I have worked to preserve the wildlife on the
Common
Land of Soham. Changes in the law concerning the movement of cattle
make it increasingly difficult to maintain grazing.
Nature Conservancy are
concerned. They are producing a management plan which the
Soham Town Council
and I will endeavour to carry out.
The Horse Fens, which are lands in trust, will be informed. Judge
Garfitt will ensure that the landowners' rights are protected. I am
attempting to make
English
Heritage aware of the educational importance of one of the few
working manors left in the country where strip fields (only two are left -
they are the amount that a horse can plough in a day),
Horse Fens and Common Land can
still be seen. Changes look as though they will be inevitable and they are
unwanted. I will do my utmost to ensure that some of the hedgerows which are
of Saxon origin are preserved. I am uncertain about the legal aspects of
looking after the grazing of cattle we have paid to be there; but
Nature Conservancy have
promised a management plan by next Spring which
Soham Town Council and I will make every effort to undertake.
