Drivers will be able to swiftly
navigate the route from Soham to Newmarket when the long awaited £12.5
million Fordham bypass officially opens on Friday 8th July 2005. Long delays
have been caused by work on the two-and-a-quarter mile stretch of road. It
has been built using 31,000 tonnes of recycled glass to form the sub-base.
The bypass will take two thirds of the vehicles which now go through Fordham
- about 11,000 cars and lorries a day will bypass the village. New
pedestrian and cycle facilities, including a bridge between Fordham and
Soham, have been included to encourage people to walk and bike in safety.
Cambridgeshire County Councillors, Judy Broadway and John Powley, who represent the Soham
and Fordham Villages Division, campaigned for the new road. Councillor Powley said: "This new road will benefit both the communities of Fordham and
Soham. It especially improves road safety for children who use these busy
routes to get to and from school."
