District Council Vows to Tackle Yobs
East Cambridgeshire District
Council has vowed to tackle head-on the problem of yobs behaving
anti-socially and causing problems in local communities. With anti-social
behaviour often causing misery for residents and local businesses, action is
to be taken to identify the culprits and bring a halt to their activities. Councillors agreed at a full Council meeting on Tuesday 19th October 2004 that anti-social
behaviour blights the quality of life for communities across the district
and have decided to press its partners in the Community Safety Partnership,
like the police, to work more effectively with the Council to address this
problem. The Council could then use its powers to issue Anti-Social
Behaviour Orders which have been shown to be effective in other areas. Councillors voiced the opinion that large amounts of public money goes
towards policing the district but, with police having their own problems,
rural communities appear to be getting a raw deal. Anti-social behaviour
needed to be stamped out before such behaviour escalated into something more
serious. Cecilia Tredget, Deputy Chief Executive, said: "Everyone in the district
wants to live and work in peace without the threat of anti-social behaviour
ruining that peace. There is only so much the police can do, so we need to
consider using the methods available to the Council and take a lead in
stamping out this problem. We will continue to work within the Community
Safety Partnership to identify and tackle such problems and seek to find
real solutions to make our district a safer place to live."
