A Councillor's
Comments - November 2003

This month we did actually have a representative
from the local constabulary giving crime statistics for Soham. Sadly burglaries
in dwellings have gone up and the police have advised people to leave a light on
whilst they are out. If you are away lamps can he connected to a timer.
CCTV Review
Still in it’s infancy, this scheme has helped to restore some public confidence.
It would appear from initial statistics that more crime is being reported
because the public feel that CCTV footage will increase the likelihood of
convictions.
The Pavilion
John our town clerk is busy getting value for money quotes for new flooring to
complete the Pavilion’s makeover. Were you aware that the Pavilions rooms are
available for hire? - (at a very reasonable cost). The town council actively
encourages community use of the Pavilion. lf you organise a local community get
together and have outgrown your front room, have you thought about the pavilion?
The council recently received a lovely thank you letter from the Methodist
church social committee who enjoyed the Pavilion’s facilities for their tea
dance. The Pavilion is used for a wide variety of groups from Mum and Babies to
the over sixties. Following the wreath laying and Service of Remembrance the
British legion host afternoon tea - this truly reflects the community usage of
this lovely old building - long may it continue.
The Soham Festival
Grant applications are in!! A giant Christmas Draw is also being organised in
order to raise funds for this event. Some members of Soham Town Forum are also
town councillors. I have to say their enthusiasm and determination to launch
this festival is fantastic. I have no doubt that this will be a great success in
the future.
Soham - The Makeover
John Selby from the Heritage Economic Regeneration Scheme (HERS for short) came
to update the council on progress which has been made. This three year scheme to
transform the look of’ our town only’ began in April so be patient. results will
he visible next year. However, priority is being given to a link between the
High Street and Budgens Supermarket.
The next meeting of the Town Council will not be until 15th December 2003, so my
'piece’ for the Town Council Website will not feature until the new year. I
would like to take this opportunity on behalf of the town council to extend the
compliments of the season to all of the community.
Kindest Regards
Fiona Ross
Soham Town Councilor
