A Councillor's
Comments - March 2002

GOOD DAY! This is my first ‘outing’ for A
Councillor's Comments. By
and large (if I may choose) I reckon the best decision made in this month’s list
is the pedestrian crossing in Pratt Street. The children’s safety must continue
(also mums’ of course) at the Junior School; and I hope we will still have a
Lollypop Lady? Thanks to Cambridgeshire County Council and Soham Town Council -
with Jointly Funded Minor Improvement Scheme.
Now then - Qua Fen and East Fen Commons. I understand that we have ‘dog bins’ to
accept ‘dog poo’ - but I’m led to believe they ain’t traceable - they’re not
there, or not in place. Allegedly they’re somewhere. Perhaps someone could stick
a label on the bins for identification ... soon.
Meanwhile - Cambridgeshire Constabulary (not attending) but with a report of 17
crimes for January: 7 thefts, 4 damages, 4 burglaries, 1 arson and 1 assault.
Recorded crime for the same period in 2001 was 60 crimes. Inspector Causer is
keen to plan for the Queen’s Jubilee - particularly thinking of any parade or
carnival in Soham.
There is, for instance, interest in holding a Motorcycle Custom Show at the
Comrades Club in Market Street on 25th May. I have no knowledge of the finer
details, but it seems a goer.
A more exciting project perhaps is the long awaited Town Council MILLENNIUM
CAPSULE - not actually ‘long’ - just about 600mm x 300mm (or 24” x 12”)! It’s
Jubilee Time across the country - we should join in enthusiastically. So what
can we put in the capsule? CDs, knife & fork, coins, beer mats, pictures to show
our houses and faces(!), video tapes, recipes, letters, maps ... go for it.
