A Councillor's
Comments - June 2004

Dear Readers, You may recall that in my last column,
I announced just that - it was supposed to be my last briefing from the Town
Council, however, due to unforeseen circumstances I am writing for this copy of
the Town Council column. Like pungent wind, it would seem I will linger on and
on and ......... on! So on to Town Council business:
We had a busy agenda in May 2004 due to it being our Annual Public Meeting, I
have never seen this meeting so well attended - thank you, those people who took
the time and trouble to come. I hope you found the evening informative. Thank
you also to our District Councillors and County Councillor for their reports.
Election of a New Chairman It was time for our current Chairman Mrs Anne Tuite to stand down. We have been
very fortunate with Anne, she has conducted herself with the utmost dignity and
professionalism during her time as chair. When events in Soham have been very
difficult, she has truly led from the front, with consideration for the
community foremost in her thoughts and actions. I am confident that Anne will
continue to serve us well as a councillor. Mrs Rosemary Aitcheson was Anne's
Vice-chairman and was unanimously elected to take on the leadership. I have got
to know Rosemary well over the last five years on the council and her northern
wit and attention to detail will serve us well. Yours truly has accepted the
nomination for vice-chair, I too have a healthy sense of humour, methinks
Rosemary and I will work well together with, I have to add, a lot of girly
giggling along the way!!
Annual Accounts We have to thank Mr John Wignall our Town Clerk, who never fails to amaze me
with his efficient operating of our accounts. We have a very healthy balance at
the financial year end and I can assure you that John would not allow us to make
any financial faux pas and on your behalf we are grateful.
Town Council Publicity & Information A working group of councillors has been formed to develop this project. They
are; Mr John Kirkham, Mr Peter Beer (a very busy man!), Mr Haydn Davies, Mr George
Ginn & yours truly - well we have to keep up some kind of gender balance don't
we? We are still very much at the planning stages, but would welcome input from
you, our electorate. If you have any ideas, please let us know, we are very
approachable!
Financial Assistance A donation has been made to the Winged Fellowship Trust, this charity provides
holidays for people of all ages with varying degrees of disability also giving
well earned respite for their carers. A donation of £250 has also been made to Soham On-Line, our award winning
community Website. Chris Scurrah has done a tremendous job with this and
deserves the Council's support. Thank you Chris!
I seem to have been saying a lot of nice things
about people in Soham in this column - that's because we are fortunate to have a
lot of people who really care about Soham and it's development. A cleric once told me, "it's not what you say - but what you do that counts",
'tis true - actions speak louder than words. I pray we continue to have an
active Town Council for many years to come. As yet, I do not know if I will continue to do this column - someone had
volunteered - perhaps they should read the paragraph above!!
Kindest Regards
Fiona Ross
Vice-Chairman of Soham Town Council
