A Councillor's
Comments - April 2004

Firstly, you may remember that in my last article I
mentioned that the Council has made a donation to the Citizen's Advice Bureau
(CAB), well good news - the money will be put towards running another session in
Soham - this is a wonderful service for our community. Also the eagerly awaited
final phase of the Pavilion's makeover is about to happen. The new floor will be
laid during the fourth week of March, all affected groups have been notified! I have to mention that in my January/February Councillor's Comments under "Crime
Watch" I wrote about young men sneaking into parked cars - this was actually a
spoof or `Urban Myth' and I, like many people was taken in. However, a reader of
Lodestar took the time and trouble to write to me to point this out and I have
to say I am glad to have the opportunity to correct my error. However car crime
continues to rise, so please be vigilant.
Town Council Publicity & Information Following last month's meeting we agreed to set up a working group. Yours truly
is on it, along with four other councillors. We aim to start work soon- Watch
this space for more details.
Annual Town Council Meeting - Monday 10th May
2004, 8.00pm at The Pavilion The purpose of this meeting is for the council to report to it's electorate on
what it has accomplished in the last year and to hear reports from District &
County Councillors. Please come along - you elect us - come and find out what we
have been doing for the past year. There is of course the opportunity for the
public to ask questions. However, specific questions need to be submitted in
writing to our town clerk by Tuesday 4th May. Hope to see you there!!
Boundary Changes As a council we were 'under whelmed' by the boundary commissions' draft
recommendations on the future electoral arrangements for Soham. In a nutshell no
notice was taken of the Town Councils objections and the draft proposal remains
to divide Soham, leaving the north of Soham grouped with Fordham villages.
Individual councillors will be writing to the Commission as well as a letter
collectively - I have e-mailed already!! I just hope common sense prevails and
Soham remains 'United'.
Insurance Soon after the September 11th atrocity, an internet poll was set up by one of
America's leading search engines. It said "This time have the terrorists gone
too far?" Hmmm - a tricky one to call, but apparently most people voted "yes".
The reality is this, we at Soham Town Council are no longer covered for acts of
terrorism by our insurance policy - we had been prior, to 9/11- now we are not!
! To insure against this type of thing happening is not feasible - please
continue to pray for world peace!
Soham Festival To close on a positive note, my fellow councillor, Mr Peter Beer, is working
flat out on this event, along, of course, with the rest of the committee. There
is to be a launch party on Thursday 1st April at 8.00pm at The ARC in Churchgate
Street. Do come along and see what they have got planned.
Kindest Regards
Fiona Ross
Soham Town Councilor
